A Web of Connections: Why the Read/Write Web Changes Everything

http://willrichardson.wikispaces.com/

Will Richardson addressed approximately 50 independent school educators and administrators on Tuesday, April 21st, at Gill St. Bernard's School. As expected, he rocked. Most of the content he drew from is included on his wiki (click the link above); my additional notes follow:

“The blog changed my life.”

I have taken on a life of “blog-vangelism”

Our kids are going to be living in – and are already living in – a connected and transparent world.

Story re: a hugely successful 11 year old blogger/activist – someone asked “how do you get your ideas” and she responded (w/o missing a beat), “I just ask my readers.”

Internet-enabled connectivity makes pursuing our passions more possible.

My kids' best teachers are going to be the ones they find, not the ones they are given.

I want my kids to be able to create, navigate, and grow their own personal learning networks in safe, effective, and ethical ways.

Can my kids’ teachers do that? Can my kids' teachers model that?

Convergence Culture by Henry Jenkins

Our students are not waiting for us.

Who is teaching kids how to do MySpace well? (No one.)

My kids will be measured, at some point – maybe many times – by what their online “footprint” looks like.

Teachers come in all shapes and sizes. The skill you need is to be able to find them, engage them, vet them (know if they’re trustworthy).

Will’s friend in Snow Lake, Manitoba: “My classrooms have thin walls.”

My kids are going to be reading and writing in hypertext environments.

The publishing piece is easy. It’s the connecting piece that’s a challenge.

Horizon report (http://wp.nmc.org/horizon2009/chapters/trends/#0):

“Increasingly, those who use technology in ways that expand their global connections are more likely to advance, while those who do not will find themselves on the sidelines.”

Steven Johnson in the Wall Street Journal –

How the E-Book Will Change the Way We Read and Write

It’s not “acceptable use” policies that we need. What we need is responsible use.

Everything is Miscellaneous by David Weinberger

At the end, Will walked us through setting up Google Reader. Here's Andy Wibbel's tutorial on that:
